Voices unheard. The end of protest as a force for social change in France?

Olivier Fillieule, Ciampi Visiting Scholar, Université de Lausanne

During his conference, Olivier Fillieule analyzed the dynamics of protests in France and the state’s responses, focusing on social movements and their interaction with the police force. Access to the French police archives, obtained in 1997 thanks to former Interior Minister Paul Quilès, allowed him to deepen his study regarding the protests against the pension reform, the “Yellow Vests” movement, and farmers’ demonstrations, with a particular focus on the evolution of law enforcement tactics in arrests and crowd control.
