US elections: what happened and what comes next?

Exactly one week after the election that saw Donald Trump return to the White House, a round table was held at the Florence site of the Scuola Normale to analyze the causes and possible effects of the U.S. election results. Speakers discussed the outcome, which—unlike that of 2016, when the complex American electoral system enabled the tycoon to defeat Hillary Clinton despite receiving fewer popular votes—was clear and indisputable from the day after the vote. The event was organized by the Carlo Azeglio Ciampi Institute for Advanced Studies, an interdisciplinary research centre of the Scuola Normale.
