Trajectories of transnational social protests in Europe
Roland Erne, Ciampi Visiting Scholar – University College Dublin
Roland Erne, a sociologist of work, highlights the role of European trade unions in strengthening democracy beyond national borders. He argues that, since 1997, the transnational mobilization of workers is more effective than technocratic or nationalist strategies, which risk marginalizing workers’ participation. Transnational protests are mainly motivated by economic claims towards government or private employers. Despite the weakening of trade unions, these mobilizations are on the rise. When European policies or large corporations threaten rights and services, unions and movements respond by joining forces at the European level.
